There are many types of compost bins in use all around the country from those that cost nothing and not utilizing worms through commercial bins built for domestic households, to purpose built commercial units utilising worms.
The simple pile.
The traditional compost pile made by simply throwing garden waste on top of what is already there. The material will rot down given time (turning it over will help) and there will be some worms found in it, however as they only live in the top 3 inches they tend to have little effect on the middle of the pile.
Purpose built bins.
These range from four old pallets nailed together, to smaller units built of old wood. They suffer the same problems of taking time to rot down, and the material does need turning over.
Worm Bins.
Can be any thing from a simple wooden structure, through to a commercially available plastic bin. The organic waste that is inputted, is turned in to rich compost in a very short period of time.
